Testing colors with BASH

colortest

The simplest way on Debian based systems is to install colortest:

sudo apt-get install colortest

It provides several commands which you can use, depending on how many colors you want:

colortest-16   colortest-16b  colortest-256  colortest-8

Thanks to this person on askubuntu.com for showing me the colortest-256 command. Really pretty stuff :)

Screenshot of colortest-256 command running in BASH, which shows a color pallete for all colors a terminal emulator can render.

Test colors with BASH

If you just want the base terminal colors and all you got is bash, you can try this:

bash
echo -e "\033[0mNC (No color)"
echo -e "\033[1;37mWHITE\t\033[0;30mBLACK"
echo -e "\033[0;34mBLUE\t\033[1;34mLIGHT_BLUE"
echo -e "\033[0;32mGREEN\t\033[1;32mLIGHT_GREEN"
echo -e "\033[0;36mCYAN\t\033[1;36mLIGHT_CYAN"
echo -e "\033[0;31mRED\t\033[1;31mLIGHT_RED"
echo -e "\033[0;35mPURPLE\t\033[1;35mLIGHT_PURPLE"
echo -e "\033[0;33mYELLOW\t\033[1;33mLIGHT_YELLOW"
echo -e "\033[1;30mGRAY\t\033[0;37mLIGHT_GRAY"
example output of the above bash echo with colors example.

Printing colors with BASH

printf with colors

Here’s a quick function I wrote for printf with green colors

# pretty echo so that I don't have to remember this
function p_echo() {
    # prints with green colors and centered
    green=$(tput setaf 2)
    norm=$(tput sgr0)
    COLUMNS=$(tput cols)
    printf "$green\n%*s\n\n$norm" $(((${#title}+$COLUMNS)/2)) "$1"
}

p_echo "Hi everyone :)"

’printf` color examples

Thanks to SiegeX on StackOverflow for all the colors.

BLACK=$(tput setaf 0)
RED=$(tput setaf 1)
GREEN=$(tput setaf 2)
YELLOW=$(tput setaf 3)
LIME_YELLOW=$(tput setaf 190)
POWDER_BLUE=$(tput setaf 153)
BLUE=$(tput setaf 4)
MAGENTA=$(tput setaf 5)
CYAN=$(tput setaf 6)
WHITE=$(tput setaf 7)
BRIGHT=$(tput bold)
NORMAL=$(tput sgr0)
BLINK=$(tput blink)
REVERSE=$(tput smso)
UNDERLINE=$(tput smul)

echo -e with colors

Example: Prints love in red:

RED='\033[0;31m'
NC='\033[0m' # No Color
printf "I ${RED}love${NC} Stack Overflow\n"

# Continued from above example
echo -e "I ${RED}love${NC} Stack Overflow"
